STRUCTURE OF YOUR SKIN

Your skin consists of three layers, the epidermis, dermis and the subcutis. The Epidermis is the outermost layer of your skin. Generally speaking it is made up of dead cells (keratinocytes) that are bonded together. Everyone’s skin is different and varies in thickness. There are lot of factors that contribute to this including one’s age and skin type.

The epidermis contains other cells including Lymphocytes, Melanocytes and Merkel Cells. Lymphocytes fight germs, Melanocytes produce and store pigment called Melanin.

Melanin protects us from UVA and harmful sun rays. Merkel Cells are nerve cells in the skin.

The Dermis is the middle layer of the skin made up of collagen. It is a network of nerve fibres, blood vessels and capillaries. Collaged is primarily what makes skin strong and elastic.

Most people who are interested in skincare would have heard of collagen but few really know what it is. Collagen loss is a factor when we age.

The Subcutis or subcutaneous layer is made up of fat and connective tissue. This are of the skin has cavities filled with storage tissue made up of fat and water. This fat provides insulation and protects our bones and joints. It also contains nerves and sweat glands..
