What are Antioxidants?

An antioxidant is a molecule that inhibits the oxidation of other molecules.

Oxidation is a type of damage that occurs when molecules lose electrons.

Antioxidants help protect our cells from damage caused by unstable molecules.  These unstable molecules are also known as “free radicals”.  Free Radicals are reactive chemicals that have the potential to harm cells.  High levels of free radicals in the body can be caused by exposure to environmental toxins eg. pollution.

The body generates free radicals as a by product of turning food into energy.  Products containing ingredients such as Vitamin C, E and Vitamin A are considered great antioxidants.  Vegetables and fruit are also very good sources of antioxidants.
